Key Pose Exercise: First Pass

Usually, I try and base a scene off of one master key pose, on which all of the gear changes, physicality and story are based upon. Essentially a storyboard pose, which communicates the absolute maximum amount of information with the least effort. I’ve been thumbnailing for a few months, and studying people discretely (and sometimes not discretely) and have begun translating those observations and drawings into these master key poses.

Bill Waterson’s ‘Calvin and Hobbes’ is such an amazing example of this that there are a few of his amazing poses captured as well. This post highlights my first pass, and I will be posting the secondary and teriary passes over the next couple months. In those I will be strengthening and sometimes completely reworking these poses and hopefully learning a lot as I do so. As always, throw me an email with some feedback or criticism on a pose that strikes you.
